Chapter Twenty

It wasn’t long after Michelle typed in Duncan’s password that Patrick sat back in the chair, wrapping his hands around the back of his head like he was lounging at a beach. He kicked his feet up onto her table. “Done.”

“That’s it?” she asked. It was rather uneventful. She’d expected more drama. More fanfare with him breaking into her boss’s security system. Not that she wanted more drama, necessarily. It was disconcertingly easy, made easier by the fact that Duncan was dumb enough to always use the same password for everything. It’s why Michelle would just choose random numbers and letters as her passwords. They were a bitch to remember, but at least her privacy was secure.

“Yeah. I deleted the footage of me breaking into the car, but I’d like to point out, no one could have made it out to be me. And if the paperwork had been returned to his office, no one would have been the wiser—”

“But I—”

“Had an alibi. You were inside with your boss at the time of the break-in. Your car was out of view of the cameras, so no one would have seen me exiting your Toyota.”

Hm. He was right on a technicality. This time. Didn’t mean they’d always get so lucky. “But it doesn’t matter now, right? You deleted footage of the break-in?”

He nodded. “I even looped footage of the previous night to make up the time stamp so that it isn’t obvious that someone deleted a chunk of footage. There’s only one small blip where I cut the scenes together. Only someone who’s really looking will see it.”

Damn. She didn’t want to admit that she was impressed, but she was. “Well, let’s just hope no one goes looking, huh?”

“Unfortunately,” he continued, “that was the easy part. Now we’ve got to either figure out the DA office’s security password or find a way to hack into it without the password. Considering it’s a security company, hacking in is going to be difficult. Not impossible, but life would be a lot easier if we had that password. What are the chances your boss used the same password there, too?”

She shook her head. “No way. We have a private security team that created all the lockdown measures there. The only person who has that code is our head of security and maybe anyone he trusts.”

“That’s what I was afraid of,” Patrick said, rubbing his fingers along the bridge of his nose. “This might be a job too big for me alone. I’ve never hacked the government before.”

“I would hope not. And if you had, I’d highly suggest not telling me about it.” She looked up just in time to catch the momentary hurt in his eyes. Here he was helping her and she just couldn’t tamp the bitch side of herself down. “Sorry,” she muttered. “I’m a little stressed.”

“You know what’s a good stress reliever?” He smiled, two dimples indenting either side of his mouth and winked so fast that if she had blinked, she would have missed it.
